While today, the modern Albertsons company has no stores in the San Antonio area at all, the San Antonio division evolved out of Southco, the Albertsons side of the business that Albertsons was able to take over after the Skaggs Albertsons partnership ended. The competitors to San Antonio included Handy Andy and H-E-B, with Handy Andy being the more "upscale" one. Albertsons was in San Antonio for a number of years, even after H-E-B grew stronger, ousting Kroger (during its brief stay in the area) and essentially Handy Andy (as a viable competitor). But ultimately, with H-E-B's growth, it became harder for Albertsons to keep up in San Antonio, and following the disastrous American Stores acquisition and facing increasingly shrinking market share, Albertsons pulled out of the San Antonio division and parts south by the end of 2002. The stores in Austin, as well as single stores in New Braunfels and Kerrville were spared and moved to other divisions.
Unfortunately, Albertsons LLC essentially handed what was left of the San Antonio division off to H-E-B. After closing nearly half of the Austin stores in 2006, the other half were sold to Albertsons in 2007, and in 2011, the New Braunfels and Kerrville locations, along with the College Station location (once in the Houston division) were sold to H-E-B. While the College Station location remained closed, a result of H-E-B's long-term lease on the property and an owner who would rather use the parking lot for a college tutoring business, the Kerrville location opened as the city's second H-E-B, and the New Braunfels location reopened as a new civic building.
While there's still a lot of gaps in the system, a big hand goes to the following sources:
