One of the more obscure, short-lived Albertsons divisions, Albertsons Great Plains was to be the Albertsons division in America's heartland, stretching from Omaha to Oklahoma. Of course, it never reached its full potential, as Kansas was skipped entirely. The division featured 22xx for Omaha and Oklahoma City stores.
That move was supposed to last until July 2007, but never did because Fleming went into bankruptcy in 2003, resulting in a court case where C&S Wholesale, which took over the contract, wanted to sell to AWG, which Albertsons wanted to pull out of. The court case lasted until 2007. There were other problems of Great Plains as well, as two markets were done through acquiring stores then transforming those radically different stores into Albertsons. The first was Smitty's, a Missouri chain that spun off from an Arizona chain of the same name. Smitty's was known for having larger-than-average stores and once a wide selection of GM items. By the time Smitty's MO was purchased by Albertsons, Smitty's AZ had suffered an identity crisis by several owners and eventually, a different name altogether. The second was three Super One stores in Des Moines (which were bought from a different grocer), a warehouse "bag your own" foods store.
The Des Moines stores went first, closing in 2001 after three short years. Then the Springfield stores closed in 2002, being sold to Price Cutter. Additionally, stores in Wichita, KS were closed as well (these were stores that had been purchased from Skaggs Alpha Beta in 1991). 2004 brought the Omaha stores to Nash Finch while ultimately combining what was left of Great Plains into Dallas-Fort Worth, and then in 2007 by selling those stores as the Dallas-Fort Worth division was pruned. By 2008 the stores were just a memory. Most of these were found just via looking up the store numbers through Google and tracing the store's lineage but a hand goes out to Albertsons Florida Blog as well, especially for the numbers for Smitty's and the Des Moines stores.
