WINDOWS NOTES
With the sc2kfix mod playing the Windows version is no longer an exercise in frustration. While it's great to utilize your screen's resolution it comes with several drawbacks compared to the Mac version, and a few benefits.
- The Windows version has features like a fourth zoom level and a debug menu accessible with a cheat code but that's where the advantages end, really.
- The whole thing was redesigned around the Windows look and feel rather than the interface built for SimCity 2000, but this makes newspapers uglier (grey color, with different fonts for the articles) and with the background of the menu bar being white instead of grey, makes the industrial demand almost impossible to see. The one advantage, albeit poorly documented, is being able to right-click on any tile to demolish it, query it, or center the map there. (This appears to be native to the Windows version and not a sc2kfix perk).
- Don't expect to make your own SimCity 2000 scenarios easily.
- Even if you turn on the "higher-quality" sound effects option they all sound noticeably worse than their Mac/DOS counterparts, including demolition sounds.
- Rail stations do not make the train whistle sound effect when placed.
- In addition to lower-quality music, it does not run as long before being cut off.
- There is a bug in the Mac 1.2 version where terrain will become simply unusable and will seem to fight your controls to fix it or develop it. I haven't discovered the cause of it yet but it seems to be either fixed or not present with Windows + SC2k fix.
- On Mac or DOS, changing the tax rate to 20% was a surefire way to send your city to its doom but on a fast enough scale the city will still experience growth waves anyway (before rapid abandonment). It is possible to make a small profit over several years with this method but I wouldn't recommend it.
- The apartment buildings are still brown.
