STATUE OF LIBERTY

This guide is to help you play the Statue of Liberty module, which is only in Japanese.

Statue of Liberty
Initial capital: 300 million yen ($3 million)
Height limit: 34 floors above ground, 5 floors below ground
Width: 180 m
Explanation: This is a project to redevelop Liberty Island, famous for the Statue of Liberty. It is a leading tourist attraction that draws many visitors from all over the world.

The way the Japanese version works is because of the conversion of 100 Yen being 1 USD, I've written the prices in dollars for consistency. I also assume that the maintenance is done per month. The descriptions are translated from Japanese, except in cases where it's already in the other modules. I hope I have all the numbers down. Keep in mind that all translations are machine-translated. I do not speak Japanese and these are going to be wonky. If you can speak Japanese and have a correction to make, drop me a line.

There's a video spoken only in Japanese that I can't understand but the gist of it is there are two people, a female tour guide and a male security guard who will meet up and fall in love at some point during the course of the game. Through uploading the video to YouTube and translating from there, the translated transcript is as follows, best I could follow and understand it: What do you think? Are you used to the building system? This time your name is Liberty Island, famous for the Statue of Liberty. It is to further develop this famous Liberty Island. Well, this is one of the best tourist attractions in the world. Relax your shoulders and go the other way around. First of all, the boat. And set up a ticket office in the lobby. Set up a ticket system and go up the elevator 23 times. Then more and more tourists come up using the spiral staircase. You will give it to me. Rather let these two people participate in the story. One is Harry, a security guard. He is a brave and honest young man who confronted the terrorists. And this is female Liberty Island guide, Marie Quant, who is in charge of Liberty Island. Once a day at a fixed time, they will have a private conversation.

DIALOGUE BOX TRANSLATIONS

Bones were discovered during underground construction. (No buried treasure.)

Treasure was discovered during underground construction. That's an unexpected windfall of 100 million yen. (I believe this is equivalent to $1M, for tenant-constructing/translation purposes.)

Treasure was discovered during underground construction. That's an unexpected windfall of 300 million yen. (I believe this is equivalent to $3M, for tenant-constructing/translation purposes.)

I received a threatening phone call from a terrorist! "Ha ha ha. We are the Shige Shige Gang. We planted a bomb somewhere on Liberty Island. This is a challenge. Can you find it?"

"Boss, I'll search for the bomb. Let's tell the tourists it's a gas leak and have them evacuate."

"Building a museum on Liberty Island is a fantastic idea. OK, I'll fully support it." (They do know that the White House and the Statue of Liberty are nowhere near each other, right?)

NOTES

- The boat ramp must be placed at the far left side of floor B1.
- There are ONLY two points where you can build an elevator from the statue's base to the lobby below, everywhere else won't reach.
- If I could do it again, I'd place the front desk on the 17th floor, since it doesn't need housekeeping and nothing else productive will fit there.
- There isn't a subway station so it looks like everyone will come in by boat; however, there are trash centers that are removed by truck. If you're going to build a truck ramp out to Liberty Island, why NOT build a full tunnel and parking garage?
- This site has some notes that I'll draw from later. Use Google Translate or something similar.
- You CAN build stuff on the 18th floor, like restrooms.
- Don't forget to connect your hotel rooms. It's all in Japanese but if you've played the game in English it should be pretty easy to figure out...
- Harry and Marie arrive at the crown at 9am every day sharp. They will remain there until 7pm.
- Both the Souvenir shop and the Cafe seem to do a profitable (if marginal) business.
- Poster, Postcard, Cap, and Miniature are the four merchandise categories (clockwise from left) fror the Souvenir shop. For the specialty bookstore, those categories are art book, science book, history book, and architecture book.
- If you can afford it, add three elevator cars, which is enough to keep people from getting stressed out on the lower level. Add a restroom and a resting area on the 18th floor.
- The website I mentioned above says to start building twin rooms on the 7th floor up and build the suites on the 5th and 6th floor.
- I believe if you discover bones but no treasure, that means treasure is nearby. You have to actually build something, not just blank space, to find something. I invested all my treasure I found in suites. The number went from 10,000 something to -1000 something, but it paid off.
- If you see a speech bubble above a restaurant, they're PROBABLY complaining about no restrooms being nearby.
- The boat runs all day starting at 6 am, it looks like it stops at 3 am on the weekends, but midnight on a weekday.
- The manual for the Statue of Liberty module suggests that the Jazz Club and the Cocktail Bar aren't supposed to be available until the second star.
- Hotels pay out at noon on the weekends. Ticket booth and shops pay out at 6 pm on the weekends. Restaurants pay out at 10 pm on the weekends.
- Like in SimTower, restaurants and fast food are different even if they're combined in this game. The cafe and other daytime fast food joints pay at 10 pm, the full-service restaurants pay out at midnight.
- The Eval factor seems to be different between the observation deck and the ticket booth. I have no idea why the observation deck is yellow (marginal, turning a small profit) while the crown is red.
- It looks like that when it comes to income, the maintenance is subtracted from the businesses' income, so when my steakhouse broke even I still lost money. That could be from other maintenance in the building, though.
- Once you get seven floors of hotel rooms built out, add a fourth elevator car.
- The specialty bookstore does considerably well instead of just marginal.
- You can place a second ticket booth.
- Put your Housekeeping toward the lower levels, and don't forget they need regular elevator access, too. Don't be like me and forget the second one needs access, demolish the first one, have most of your hotel rooms become roach infested, and lose the primary source of income. I may have screwed my whole save file by letting that happen as there was no way to gain profitability or even cut expenses before the next round of expenditures hit.
- I may have discovered you can hit treasure twice, though I can't be sure if it's the same place or not.
- Changing the pet store to sell only small birds (upper left) does mean it's not a consistent money-loser anymore.
- Keep checking in on Harry and Marie, they'll sometimes drop hints about what tenants are needed. Otherwise, just build out hotels and shops/restaurants and wait until you're hitting 3000 consistently.
- During a normal day, the population stops rising around 10 pm and resets at midnight.

GETTING TO STAR TWO

You can't just speed-run your way to the TOWER rating, you have to check on Harry and Marie. Marie will yap about nonsense for a time while Harry continues to hem and haw about talking to her. I didn't copy everything that Harry and Marie said but I did get a few screenshots. (Check here for Harry's page, and here for Marie's). Eventually, Harry figures out she's into fortune-telling, which triggers a second video: "Excuse me young lady. Actually, I'm a fortune-teller and I'm here to tell you your fortune. Yes. Your face shows that you will fall in love with a man you meet from now on. The man's name is..." "Ah, Harry?" "That's right." "Are you perhaps Harry?" "Uh, no, I'm a fortune-teller. Goodbye!" The next segment is triggered with a jazz club and a few more days of listening, there's a third segment where Harry plays a guitar. At some point once you start hitting 800 people consistently you will trigger the VIP visit, which I have covered here.

GETTING TO STAR TWO

- It took me a while but after building enough hotel rooms I got to 800 people visiting on a normal day, but also the approval of a VIP. This took a while as I was hitting those numbers and had placed every item available to me, until "Hill Cleamton" finally showed up as a VIP. His dialogue box (shows up as three people) is fun. You have to check on

GETTING TO STAR THREE

After this, Harry will start talking about a recent bombing in Los Angeles, while Marie talks about enjoying alcoholic drinks (which is a hint for a cocktail bar, if you haven't already added it), then there will be something about a pet shop (she buys a snake and shows Harry) which results in a fourth video of Harry trying to make friends with the snake, then talking about hotels (which you should've already built), then cocktail bars (a fifth video appears of Harry trying to mix drinks at home). He will then talk about how his cocktail of whiskey, wine, beer, and tequila didn't go over so well before a sixth video where he finally asks her out (this requires a seafood restaurant). Once the story progresses far enough, you will get the terrorist message like in other modules, but will be geared to the storyline, and you can only try to find the bomb, not giving you the option of paying him off like other modules, no matter your finances. Harry looks for the bomb, but it's only a small bomb at the gift shop and causes no damage to your tower. Harry says the terrorist will try again. Things look good until Harry gets friendzoned while at the date, then it's back to Harry being sad until he decides to get something for Marie's birthday (which needs an antique store). Eventually she'll start talking about a clock, which triggers another scene. Finally, they'll start talking about a new tenant that you don't have access to, which eventually culminates in the dialogue box mentioned below and the addition of the Museum to your inventory. This also requires having 3,000 visitors to your tower visiting on a normal day, but by this time the tower should be well filled out.

THE END OF THE STORY

If you're just interested in placing everything you can, you can stop playing once you place the museum. But, if you're interested in the story, check in on both November and December, you'll then trigger another video, where Marie is in love with the person redeveloping Statue of Liberty (you, the player). After a few more exchanges, Harry will get depressed and considers looking for a transfer. After Harry's line, "I am grateful to my boss for everything", the next day the terrorists will call, this time demanding money. I've put the ending on a different page as there are some spoilers. Click here for finding the bomb or here for paying them off.

FINAL NOTES

Even before 9/11, I can see why the Statue of Liberty module was doomed. The "love story" is boring (and I can't imagine it getting re-dubbed), it's ALL hotels, the shops and restaurants are extremely limited, and there's not much space to work with. The building's top feels too constrained, while the basement has you repeating the various shops and restaurants just to fill space, with overall a very poor choice of what to put in there. Plus, I'm not sure that openly talking about alcoholic beverages could've allowed it to keep the ESRB rating it had (though they got away with the movies in the base game).

The Twin Towers glow in the distance in the night, and to be honest, a post-9/11 "rebuild the Twin Towers" sounds like a more interesting concept, especially as the Twin Towers and their smaller, adjacent buildings have more in common with what we know and love with these games. You could build out the offices, build the observation deck and Windows on the World as end-game tenants, build out the Mall at the World Trade Center, add some licensed tenants for that authentic NY flavor, and so on. Oh well.
