Carbon-izer - Gulf Freeway
Gulf Freeway in Harris County
This covers Gulf Freeway (I-45) in Harris County before numbering resets at Galveston County. Version 3.0 of this page picked up from the existing South Houston Roads page and incorporated from other additions (including Inner Loop and Outer Loop) while just adding eight new entries. Version 4.0 builds onto that with additional features for a more complete page with proper sections, not just a rudimentary collection of items, all while adding additional entries and minor tweaks.

Additions: Starbucks (at Cullen), Mobil, Valero, Taco Cabana, Mambo Seafood (at Flowers), 7002 Gulf Freeway (former Sonic), 7125 Gulf Freeway (former Stellar Bank), 8537 Gulf Freeway (medical tenants), 9902 Gulf Freeway (hotel and restaurant), Cavender's Boot City, Mambo Seafood (at Clearwood), Floor & Decor, 12895 Gulf Freeway (former TGI Friday's), Gateway at Ellington, 18980 Gulf Freeway (Baybrook Mall outlot), and Forest Park East Funeral Home & Cemetery.
Updates: Dot Coffee Shop, 7143 Gulf Freeway (former Bennigan's), and 8926 Gulf Freeway (former Erotic City)

EMANCIPATION AVENUE to SOUTH LOOP EAST

Emancipation Avenue (formerly Dowling Avenue) marks the point where St. Joseph Parkway (formerly Calhoun Street) starts. As a result, there aren't many Gulf Freeway addresses before this point.

Starbucks / 3925 Gulf Freeway
This Starbucks opened in December 2022. From Starbucks' lot down to the intersection at Cullen Boulevard and then all the way back to Coyle Street was the old Fingers Furniture warehouse, headquarters, and flagship store at 4001 Gulf Freeway, which closed in 2012 as the storied local chain under. It was torn down in 2020.

Mobil / 4085 Gulf Freeway
This Mobil opened in 2022 with 7-Eleven as the convenience store and Laredo Taco Company inside. With so many almost-new 7-Eleven stores closing or being sold these days I'm not confident on this one but it's still active as of June 2026.

Valero / 4707 Gulf Freeway
This Circle K/Valero was built as a Stop N Go in the mid-1980s. It got rebranded to Circle K around the late 2010s after being rebranded to Corner Store in the mid-to-late 2000s. (It also used the Diamond Shamrock name in the mid-1990s to the early 2000s).

Taco Cabana / 5930 Gulf Freeway
If this Taco Cabana didn't open December 2008 then it did within a month or two.

BreWingz / 6006 Gulf Freeway
This former Monterey House/Monterey's Tex-Mex Cafe was later Wings 'N More (rebranded to BreWingz in the 2010s).

6867 Gulf Freeway
This was built as The Foundry in 1974. The second location of "The Foundry #1" at 3230 Chimney Rock, "The Foundry #2" featured "Steuben glass chandeliers, Belgian solid brass chandeliers, hand-etched glass doors from Natural Graphics and the finest prime rib, steaks, and seafood". At some point in 1978, The Foundry #2 became Beef 'N' Barrel Company. I am not sure if this was a re-tooling of the concept (The Foundry at Chimney Rock continued to operate) or the sale of the second location. By the early 1980s it was called Bonnie's Beef 'n Barrel Company and later became Bonnie's Beef & Seafood Company in the late 1980s. It ended up closed in 2015, though the Chron seems to have their opening date wrong. Figures...it was the Post that covered its early years.

Mambo Seafood / 6945 Gulf Freeway
The current tenant here, Mambo Seafood, opened in May 2023. Originally it was Steak & Ale from 1969 to the mid-1980s (possibly the first Houston location) and in 1986 became Pappa Tacos Mexican Cafe (fast food style, with no entree over $4) which operated for less than two years before becoming Little Pappas (seafood). By the late 1990s it became Pappas Seafood House and became the new concept Pappas Shrimp Shack in mid-2019 before closing permanently in June of next year. The large road sign was never changed.

6955 Gulf Freeway
Former James Coney Island. During the mid-to-late 2010s the chain was rebranded as "JCI Grill" but this location closed in late 2018 following the loss of parking space.

Denny's / 6969 Gulf Freeway
Grandy's closed in 1999 here and Denny's took it over by the end of the year 2000, initially doing almost no exterior changes.

7002 Gulf Freeway
This Sonic Drive-In closed around 2018 (likely due to the road construction in the area) and was torn down afterward. It looked a little unusual from the outside as it was built as a Rally's in the mid-1990s, which it was briefly (Sonic took over in 1997). From the early 1970s to the late 1980s it was the home of an Exxon gas station.

Dot Coffee Shop / 7006 Gulf Freeway
This opened in January 1970 as "Dot Shop", the "Coffee" was added later. Remarkably, it's still a 24 hour restaurant.

7125 Gulf Freeway
Fort Worth-based Texas American Bancshares opened Gulf Southern National Bank here in October 1975. By the late 1980s it had become Texas American Bank-Galleria, also owned by Texas American Bancshares, and after a brief time as Texas American Bridge Bank became TeamBank in 1989 before the branch closed, with Texas Commerce Bank opening in 1993. I can't find the history of the bank in the interim, but in 2008 this was Enterprise Bank and became Allegiance Bank around 2015 before a merger changed it to Stellar Bank in early 2023. It closed in December 2025 a day after the Stellar Bank branch at 14770 Northwest Freeway closed.

7143 Gulf Freeway
Bennigan's was here from 1980 to 2008. It sat vacant and deteriorated for years before its demolition in 2025.

SOUTH LOOP EAST to SOUTH SAM HOUSTON PARKWAY EAST / EAST SAM HOUSTON PARKWAY SOUTH

Guzman Law Firm / 8225 Gulf Freeway
This was built as Randall's Restaurant & Club back in 1973 (not related to the supermarket chain, this one was owned by one Randall Hunt), of which some more information can be found here). In 1988, an EPA agent by the name of David Delitta was killed in a robbery. Drug addict and bank robber Anibal Garcia Rosseau was named as a suspect and was ultimately sentenced to death before dying in prison in 2006, though new evidence indicates that Rosseau wasn't the person who shot Delitta. In any case, Randall's closed in 1993 and was replaced by Holbrooks Bar & Grill which operated until 1997, with a third restaurant (Emery's on the Green) opening in 1998 but I can't find what happened to it. Guzman Law Firm was operating in the site within a decade.

V Star / 8440 Gulf Fwy.
From 1974 to around 2010 this was a Luby's Cafeteria (dropping the "Cafeteria" part by the late 1990s/early 2000s) but by 2012 was renovated and reopened as V Star Chinese buffet. The building looks very different compared to its days as a Luby's.

Starbucks / 8515 Gulf Fwy.
I actually have been to this Starbucks before with my sister and the first thing I noticed was that the signage used was recycled from a gas station (while StarbucksEverywhere, which I have used quite frequently with this site, indicates that this coffeeshop opened in October 2007, it does not show the signage. A Shell station previously operated here from 1979 to around 2002.

8537 Gulf Freeway
The main anchor of Monroe Plaza, this has (as of 2026), Fresenius Kidney Care Southeast in suite A, Grifols Biomat USA - Plasma Donation Center in suite B, and Bay Area Vascular Center in suite C (actually, it's just 8527 with no C). This opened around late 1980 as Handy Dan (hardware store chain) before they liquidated in 1989 with the chain, and I can't find any other retailer that replaced it.

Ninfa's / 8553 Gulf Freeway
One of the few (non-Mama Ninfa's) Ninfa's Tex-Mex restaurants in the Houston area (or anywhere, really—the chain is dwindling in numbers), this started out as a location of El Torito (#52) in 1979, which was rapidly growing under W.R. Grace's ownership. Around 1991 it closed and became Ninfa's by the end of 1992.

Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott / 8730 Gulf Freeway
This opened as a Holiday Inn Express in 2003 (Holiday Inn Express Houston-Hobby Airport). It was closed and renovated around late 2013/early 2014 (with an exterior update) when it became its current branding (Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Houston Hobby Airport).

8926 Gulf Freeway
This demolished site had been a strip mall for the last ten years of its existence. It started out as Young's Chinese Restaurant in the early 1980s (circa 1983), briefly became a Chinese buffet in the mid-1990s called Ginger & Spice and in August 1996 it opened as Lucky Dragon Restaurant before it closed in 2006 and put up for sale in January 2007. At this point it became a strip club, though kept the Chinese restaurant architecture. It was initially called Diamond Club South when it opened in 2007 but under the same ownership reformatted twice, first to "Sinfully Young" in 2011, and in fall 2014 became The Landing Strip (closed by September 2016). The last known club was Erotic City.

9220 Gulf Freeway
Former Taco Cabana. Closed January 2020 as part of company restructuring. Still vacant as of June 2024.

9902 Gulf Freeway
In 1984 this was a La Quinta Inn with Kettle at 9902A in front of it, and as of April 2026 the hotel was Red Roof Inn & Suites but as of June it's being reported as "South Houston Inn & Suites Hobby Airport I 45", an Oyo-associated hotel. The restaurant is still Las Islitas #2 which opened sometime between spring 2024 and spring 2026. Both the restaurant and hotel have gone under numerous names, and these will be further examined in a future update.

Cavender's Boot City / 10102 Gulf Freeway
This was Don's Western Wear from 1980 to 1996. In 1998 Cavender's Boot City moved here from 9900B Gulf Freeway. It does have a "neon Cavender" and is best seen during the evenings.

Mambo Seafood / 10402 Gulf Freeway
This Mambo Seafood was built as a new-build in the parking lot in 2011.

Floor & Decor / 11542 Gulf Freeway
This opened as a Venture (#125) but unusually was carved out of other big box store locations. In 1997 it was sold to Kmart, which reopened it in November 1997 after minimal renovations and operated until June 2002. By 2008 it was operating as Floor & Decor with a Famsa operating in a space at 11546 at the end. Famsa closed sometime around 2017-2018 but in the early 2020s it would be replaced with Burlington, which moved from Almeda Mall.

Almeda Mall / 12200 Gulf Fwy.
A favorite subject of Tori Mask's South Belt Houston Digital History Archive, Almeda Mall has been operating since 1968 and was built as a "twin" to Northwest Mall (including an almost-identical tenant roster). Unfortunately, as of this writing, it is now anchorless with Burlington (former J.C. Penney site) gone since the early 2020s and Macy's (formerly Foley's) on the early 2025 closure list.

BreWingz / 12250 Gulf Freeway
Former Steak & Ale, became Wings 'N More after 2008 closure (converted to BreWingz in the 2010s).

InTown Suites / 12485 Gulf Freeway
Built as Sun Suites Extended Stay in 1998 and became InTown Suites in early 2017.

12895 Gulf Freeway
TGI Friday's was here from 1983 to November 2024 when the chain went bankrupt and closed its remaining Houston locations.

Palm Harbor Homes / 13030 Gulf Freeway
A small location of Palm Harbor Homes is wedged in this small lot, having opened in March 2013 and relocating from 15121 Gulf Freeway.

It's actually off the ramp to go to the westbound Beltway 8 frontage road and impossible to get back on the southbound Gulf Freeway frontage road. Luckily the turnaround at Sabo Road/Hughes Road is not too far away.

SOUTH SAM HOUSTON PARKWAY EAST / EAST SAM HOUSTON PARKWAY SOUTH to Clear Creek

McDonald's / 14270 Gulf Freeway
This McDonald's was rebuilt in 2018 from the old red roof mansard model. The new model didn't have a Playplace.

Gateway at Ellington / 15603 Gulf Freeway
The only apartment complex in this section with freeway access, this was Cooper's Mill Apartments from their opening in 1982 to 2014 when it assumed its current name.

The Home Depot / 18251 Gulf Freeway
This location of The Home Depot has been here since 2008 when it relocated from 20251 Gulf Freeway.

18980 Gulf Freeway
Until the early 2020s this held E&G Amish Furniture (closed late 2010s) and Impression Bridal (suite B, closed 2025). E&G Amish Furniture replaced Tweeter and I believe Brooks Mays Music was there prior to Impressions Bridal. The original tenant was Krause's Sofa Factory, which construction exposed in 2025. I'm not sure of the current tenants.

Baybrook Mall / 19000 Gulf Freeway
Baybrook Mall actually is officially located at "500 Baybrook Mall". Even as Houston was booming and retailers had pie-in-the-sky ideas about how many department stores Houston could support, Baybrook Mall opened in 1978 as a modest, compact center with just Joske's, Montgomery Ward, and Sears. By 1984 it gained Macy's and Mervyn's, and by the time a major lifestyle center/power center was built, it had five department stores, Dillard's (former Macy's), JCPenney (former Wards), Forever 21 (former Mervyn's), Macy's (former Joske's), and Sears (the only original anchor, but it closed in 2017 without replacement).

I've previously written on this site that Sears had a McDonald's inside (a few prototypes did) but that's incorrect. It did have a Sears Bakery Deli Cafe though!

Pappas Delta Blues Smokehouse / 19901 Gulf Freeway
This was the site of Boater's World Marine Center from 1993 to 2009 (the whole division was liquidated). After sitting vacant for a few years, the building was demolished and replaced with Bone Daddy's House of Smoke (opened January 2013). In 2017 it was closed and converted into Pappa Delta Blues Smokehouse.

Houston Garden Centers / 20050 Gulf Freeway
This garden center was built in 2013 in previously undeveloped space. Wolfe Nursery, an older garden center chain where HGC did pick up a few locations, had been located behind Baybrook Square, but that was long gone before HGC built a new location here. I've placed this up here because of its proximity to where Pappas Delta Blues Smokehouse is rather than across from Luby's.

Pappas Seafood House / 19991 Gulf Freeway
This was built as Juarez Bar & Grill in 1985, and became Pappas Seafood House within a year.

Luby's/Fuddruckers / 20001 Gulf Freeway
A combo Luby's/Fuddruckers restaurant (if it's anything like the one I visited in Austin, the seating areas are separate, only some common things like restrooms are shared) that opened in August 2014. It was built at a time when those restaurants were under common ownership. The previous building was demolished in the mid-2000s.

20251 Gulf Freeway
The Home Depot operated here from late 1994 to late 2008 when it moved to 18251 Gulf Freeway. After being vacant for about a decade (by this time the roof needed to be replaced), Urban Air Adventure Park opened a large location in 2019 with the rest of the space taken up by D-Bat Baseball & Softball Academy by 2022, and Goldfish Swim School to open sometime in 2023. By 2024, the garden center of Home Depot was torn down and replaced with a stand-alone Little Woodrow's.

The building still has the orange awnings of Home Depot.

20740 Gulf Freeway
Fiesta was going places in the late 1980s and early 1990s, building large, upscale stores in suburban areas, with their Webster store (Fiesta Mart #19) was the biggest of them all, opening in October 1989 with about 200,000 square feet of space (numbers were quoted from 180k to 236k square feet). It made industry headlines with a hydroponic garden, with produce later sold in the store grown in liquid and an artificial growing environment. Unfortunately, once things settled down, the customer count was not able to offset high overhead of the hydroponic garden. In 1991, 45,000 square feet was cut out for a new store, which SportsTown (20750 Gulf Freeway) occupied from early 1992 to fall 1995 when the chain went under.

Fiesta closed entirely by the end of 1993 and was replaced by Burlington Coat Factory (later just "Burlington") in 1994, but in 2020 Burlington relocated to a former Toys R Us on Bay Area Boulevard (having gradually shrunk its size over the years as well), with Floor & Decor taking its place by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the former SportsTown was replaced by The Book Market, a discount bookstore in fall 1996, which in turn was replaced by The RoomStore furniture store. It went out of business after midnight on Memorial Day 2012 when it closed its Texas stores as part of its bankruptcy. In fall 2013 it became Sears Outlet (leasing about 33k square feet of space), which was rebranded as American Freight in 2020 (announced going out of business late 2024). Other tenants also took up space around the former Fiesta Mart space as well.

At Home / 20780 Gulf Freeway
This has been here since 1996 (formerly known Garden Ridge until a 2014 rebranding). In October 1989 it opened as Pottery Mart, a store similar to Garden Ridge, owned by local businessman Larry L. Ham. It closed as late as January 1996 but probably closed sometime in late 1995.

Given the similarity between the two stores it is entirely possible that Garden Ridge purchased Pottery Mart and closed it for conversion to its own brand, though there's also evidence that it may have been the plan all along...

Cinemark NASA & XD / 20915 Gulf Fwy.
CinemaTreasures noted this 18-screen movie theater (with the XD screen added later for a total of 19) was opened August 2000 but doesn't offer much information beyond that.

21300 Gulf Freeway
Fry's Electronics opened its second Houston-area store in December 2004 in a newly-built 145k square feet location facing north. The access to the store was a little strange (only way in were two back entrances off Kobayashi Road South behind the store, no access from the frontage roads nor NASA Bypass Road) but nevertheless was a fixture of the area before closing with the chain in early 2021 (it will be missed). Axiom Space took over the building a few years later for offices, but kept the ISS-themed décor of the interior.

Topgolf / 21401 Gulf Freeway
The Webster location of Topgolf opened in November 2015.

American Furniture Warehouse / 21501 Gulf Fwy.
This large furniture store opened late 2019.

Forest Park East Funeral Home & Cemetery / 21620 Gulf Freeway
The last Gulf Freeway address of Harris County before the numbering resets at Galveston County has been here since at least the 1980s.
